Learn to be a Counsellor

I found study to be to fairly easy most of the time, to do at home in-between work and volunteering. The setup is manageable if you read the help tips.

What was hard to do was to keep time aside for study online, when I had so much going on in life with fulltime work, fitness, study and martial arts training. Oh and a puppy that was training with socialising and walking!

Having a tutor, even with the small additional cost, was invaluable. The tutor was very helpful to while I was studying, especially in keeping me motivated and on-task. I found volunteering to be extremely rewarding and gave hands on experience while learning through the AIPC Diploma – this also gives a reference and a basis of how some organisations work.

I look forward to using my Diploma to continue helping others in their life journey.

After an amazing career as a policewoman, only losing it to an accident, I found myself being a stay at home mum again and using all my time for the family and allowing nothing for myself. In my forties, with plenty of time on my hands I found myself becoming increasingly disillusioned with how my life was becoming a dull routine and no longer challenging. My husband suggested further study into something I was passionate about and that is when I came across the AIPC website.

I sat on it for a few weeks before realising it was me that was able to map my life out and make something great out of it because nobody was going to knock on my front door and do it for me. I made the call and spoke with Rob Carrigan who was a wealth of information and encouragement. I began studying for the Diploma of Counselling in July 2012 and was excited yet a little nervous when my first pack arrived in the mail. I dedicated all my spare time to my studies and the workshops and graduated in July 2013.

The support of the AIPC team was brilliant and I have made some lifelong friends and colleagues. After graduating I held my diploma and thought "Well, what now?" I decided not to wait, because the time would never be just right and instead began networking furiously with other graduates as well as attending short courses on offer from other government and non-government agencies to not only increase my professional development but to also get my name out there and let myself be known to people. I applied for a job in mental health and to my surprise (and delight), won a full time position for a federally funded organisation.

Challenges certainly make life interesting but overcoming them is what makes our lives more meaningful. I realised that I have a place in the world and it's my life, so I am doing all I can with it and making it the life I want to live.

Studying at AIPC was definitely a choice in life that I will never forget or regret. The lecturers and teachers modelled exceptional care, excessive knowledge, as well as being so supportive in all areas of learning. It was excellent to see that they were not only there to teach, but they understood the significance of being patient with their students and helping them through the criteria of the work required. The studying options were so convenient and worked around the lifestyle I was in, where I was able to receive my Diploma of Counselling successfully. Within my experience, AIPC provide a comfortable way of learning for their students and provide online submissions, as well as in-class interaction. In-class interaction was a great way to meet other people who were also studying the same course and it allowed friendships to take place. The workbooks are provided with plenty of information and each question given in the workbooks allow a new level of understanding. I felt like I gained so much knowledge from a topic after reading just one paragraph!

Graduating from this course was such a fulfilling experience and one that will never leave my memory. Not only did I receive my completed Diploma, but I was also privileged enough to meet some incredible people who have aided in the successful steps towards my career. I am now currently working in a Primary School as a Christian Pastoral Support Worker and work within The Refugee Services, not only because of my own choices towards selecting AIPC as a place to learn and grow in, but because the supportive and encouraging teachers, as well as staff strive to see their students learn in the best way they can. I would highly recommend this course for anyone seeking a career in counselling! AIPC hold a standard of excellence in all aspects of learning and it has been an absolute pleasure being one, out of many pleased students who have happily graduated from this course.
